Welcome to the about us page...
I thought I would take a moment to introduce myself and my husband. We are a team who enjoy the life of being Pug owners.
My Name is Jayne and my husband's name is Barry. We started Just For Pugs Pet-A-Cure Services in July of 2008. Let me tell you a bit about why we started this business...
It started several years ago, when we only had one Pug and a Maltese. I was taking them to the groomer to have their nails clipped and bringing them home to file the sharp edges down with an emery board. This took hours, they got tired and so did I.
This is when I decided to find a better way to do their nails. I spent days searching the internet for answers, and I found one. A rotary tool to shorten and smooth the nails all in one sitting. This was the answer I was looking for. I read every piece of information I could find on the subject and when I was finally confident that I could do this; I bought my first rotary tool. I perfected my technique on those two beautiful fur babies for several years.
Our Maltese passed away about three years ago now and when he passed our Pug was very lonely. We started looking for another Pug to keep him company.
We found a breeder that had a mother and daughter pair that she was selling, at first we thought we would only get the daughter who was only a year old at that time; but when we saw both of them together and the mothers face we decided we had to have them both.
When the daughter came of age to breed Barry and I thought we would give it a try for one litter and then get her spayed. Little did we know that we would fall in love with the concept of breeding and caring for our Pugs and the babies, as well as finding excellent forever homes for the babies. So, now we are grooming our Pugs nails and breeding.
This is when the business was born. I advertised on Kijiji that I groomed nails of Pugs, this grew to including all small dogs, 30 lbs and under and we just recently added Pug sitting, Pug bathing & shaving.
The smaller dog was chosen because we use a baby carrier to hold them while the nails are being groomed. Small dogs nails also tend to grow faster than larger dogs' nails. There didn't seem to be anyone in the Halifax Metro Area that was specializing in small dog nail grooming so; here we are.
I am not going to lie, this is still not the dogs most favorite thing to have done, but they accept it much better than they accept the clippers.
We still have dogs that "freak out" with the process and then we have others that just sit back and close their eyes and let us do the grooming. Using a rotary tool doesn't hurt them if done properly, and the quick is not damaged. Plus they have the comforting feeling of being close to a human being while this is going on.
Some of our clients have come to us in the beginning and told us they didn't think we could do the nails of their fur baby because they just hate having their nails done. After the first session they have been totally amazed at how calm the dog was and amazed too that we were able to get the nails short and smooth.
Well, this is where we are in our life now. We have five Pugs and a business that is growing at a moderate pace. Allowing us to grow with it and make changes as we go. Improving the service and the business to become our life's work. What better way to make a living?
Thank you for taking the time to get to know a little bit about who we are and how we became "Just For Pugs Pet-A-Cure Services".
